“In approaching this piece, I found myself coming back to the question of what does it mean to write specifically for the radio? The majority of my existing practice has very much centred on live performance: places, spaces, people, physicality, the air shared in the (small) space between performers and listeners. Liveness - and liveliness - has always felt so fundamental to my practice. So, when offered the exciting opportunity to compose for the radio, I needed to do some (re)thinking. How does one approach the concept of physicality, when the physicality of performance is unseen? How to find a sense of relationality, with an unknown, unseen listener? How to charge the air with energy, across space and time?” - Ihlara McIndoe

As part of the FranceMusique programme Création mondiale, we worked with composer Ihlara McIndoe on a new work designed for radio presentation. Separated into five short movements, the work draws inspiration from the radio itself as a medium — what it means to for performers’ actions to be translated, and transformed, by their dispersal via radio transmission.

The resulting work is a fragile, intimate exploration of how sounds — and voices — are can be modulated by their own disembodiment.
